One month after I said I was starting a 16-week training program to a half marathon, I’m starting over on the same program through Smart Coach from the Runner’s World website. I still based my pace off a run on an elliptical at the fitness center in the last week of October: at 32:40 for a 5K. That might be a little disingenuous, since I also ran in reverse on it, and if I was running all out, I might run at a better pace for the 5K, but still again, it seems a realistic place to start.

The program begins today and lasts until March 25, 2007 which technically is when I should be running the half marathon. However, I’ll be running the half the following week at the Cook Forest Half Marathon on March 31, 2007 in western Pennsylvania. Since my last blog, I checked online and found the times of runners in previous races, and based on that, I believe I wouldn’t be the last to finish (which always is a good thing). I went through finishing last enough when I was in cross country in high school or second to last that I really don’t think I can ever do that again.

Originally, I had my long run day on Sunday, but since I am apt to watch football on Sundays (at least up until February), I moved my long run day to Saturday. The way the schedule falls, for the most part, is runs on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, with rest and cross training days in between. What I plan to do is get to the fitness center for weight training on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, alternating between arms and legs every other workout. Also I’ll mix in my core along with that, of course. But for simplicity sake, I’ll stick to alternating arms and legs.
So “Am I ever gonna change?” As the song says in the last verse: “Am I ever gonna change/Take it day by day…”
