Stanza 9 and Commentary On It in The Spiritual Canticle by St. John of the Cross
My commentary on Section 6
It is well with my soul, says the hymn of old. But is it? At times, it is, as St. John describes it, not at rest, because it lacks possession, complete possession by God — but of course, if we were to have that, we would be dead. So in the meantime, we struggle in our heart, torn between this world and the next.
To be suspended in the air with nothing to lean on. That is true faith: to know that God’s love buoys us.
Lord, let your love lift me up when I doubt. Amen.
